This episode is about essential oils. Have you ever passed a bakery and caught the scent of freshly baked rolls and breads? Perhaps it transported you to a time and place of fond memories. You recall the past because smell is linked to the limbic system that houses our emotional and behavioral responses.
Your sense of smell in the brain are connected. This is why essential oils affect your emotional state. You are likely aware of the common scents such as lavender, frankincense, ylang, ylang, clary sage, or eucalyptus. These are used for stress, anxiety, calm, and relaxation. The essential oil combination I rely on is a blend called emotional rescue.
Here's how I use it:
- before a meeting
- before sleep
- after a stressful phone call
- when I catch myself overthinking
- during a panic attack or to prevent one
Now you've heard me say that sometimes I cannot use breath practices for pre-panic or during panic because it's just more than I can handle.
I can't count, breath or try to create a rhythm, but what I can do is inhale a whiff from my emotional rescue bottle.
I hold it under my nose, inhaling deeply and slowly five times. By the time I get to the fifth inhale, I'm in a place where I can get my brain to use other calming methods such as breath or reciting a comforting scripture.
Now you might be wondering what's so special about this blend. It contains a few of the more uncommon oils. Vetiver: this is a woody, earthy, slightly smoky scent associated with grounding and calm.
Immortelle has warm honey-like and slightly spicy tones with floral and herbaceous undertones to address nervousness.
Cardamom starts with a strong, fresh, and slightly eucalyptus-like scent before softening into a more deeply warm and woody scent. And this helps you with concentration and emotional balance.
The essential oil bottle is small, fits in my purse, so I have it everywhere I go. While I can sniff it without a carrier oil, I do not let it touch my skin.
Carrier oils prevent the concentrated oil from burning or irritating your dermis. The carrier oil aids in absorption as well. You can put Emotional Rescue in a diffuser on your desk, or buy your home computer, add the oil to unscented lotions, or in the bathtub.
